A Balloon safari!

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Serengeti National Park on a once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon flight. Siringet – “the place of endless plains” in the language of the Maasai, has 14,763km2 of African savannah stretching as far as the eye can see. It is most famous for its wondrous array of wildlife, stunning landscapes, and enchanting lakes — a true jewel of Africa! It is an experience of a lifetime as you rise with the sun and gently bob through the air in whichever direction the winds of the morning take you.

Pick up is at early dawn usually around 5.00/5.30 AM and you could grab a coffee and a light breakfast before departing your lodge/camp. On your way to the launch site, you may spot nocturnal animals that you could not have encountered at any other time of day. There is a pre-launch safety briefing from the pilot while the balloon is being inflated. Flight time is approximately 1 hour and the balloon can ascend up to 1000 ft exposing the vast magnificence and spectacular panorama of the Serengeti below. The pilot can precisely control the altitude of your balloon, sometimes flying at treetop height so you can see individual animals at close quarters. Upon landing, you will be welcomed with a champagne reception toasting wish you a “long life”. After that a splendid bush breakfast in the middle of the Serengeti awaits.

This activity is available throughout the year. However, the dry season (June to October) is the ideal time for a hot balloon safari in the Serengeti. Is a hot air balloon safari in the Serengeti worth it? Absolutely!

Rundugai Hot Springs

The beautiful Rundugai Hot Springs also known as Kikuletwa Hot Springs or Chemka hot springs are an unexpected paradise hidden in the desert scrub outside the town of Bomang’ombe situated about 71 km from Arusha (1h30 drive). Locals call this wonder the ‘Chemka Maji Moto’ meaning ‘boiling warm water’. This refers to the way in which the bubbling water emerges from underground. In fact, the water is not hot, rather it has a pleasant temperature and is crystal clear, so you can see all the way to the bottom. The Rundugai Hot Springs are surrounded by tropical palm trees and impressive roots of big fig trees. It’s a true paradise and a great place to swim, relax, picnic and enjoy the beauty nature has to offer. There is also a rope swing for jumping into the water. On clear days you can even see the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro from up here.

Walking Safari

Walking safari is completely different to game driving. On foot you are a participant in the world of wildlife rather than a spectator, a thrilling and unbeatable safari experience. On foot you can walk into remote areas and reach places that a safari car can’t. Once on foot, you are not constrained by roads and can go almost anywhere you like. Away from the crowds, off the beaten track. It offers you a freedom incomparable to any game drive safari.

Moreover, walking safaris in the National Parks have to abide by the strict rules laid out by TANAPA (Tanzanian National Park Authorities); these rules have been put in place to make walking as safe as possible for everyone. You will  be accompanied by at least one TANAPA qualified armed ranger, who must stick to specific walking routes. These regulations are however relatively new to Tanzania’s national parks; and so we would only recommend walking from camps that we know have a consistent record for reliably good walking safaris, and well established guides. Interestingly, all of our recommended Camps use their own highly qualified guides who stick to rules, which have been set by their specific camp – these walking safaris are very good.

Tanzanite Experience

The Tanzanite gemstone, the beautiful blue December birthstone, is known for its beauty and rarity. It comes in blue violet and violet colours that can be vivid and stand out. The gemstone is also trichroic meaning that it can produce multiple colours when set under different lights. It’s not everyday that you’ll find someone wearing Tanzanite jewelry.

Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Mererani in northern Tanzania. Tanzania is the world’s only source of Tanzanite, making Tanzanite a very rare gem. Tanzanite’s discovery came as an alternative to Sapphire, and those who like blue gemstones were finally presented with a cost-effective but rare choice in Tanzanite.

The Tanzanite gemstone is a unique souvenir of your East African adventure and a must-have in any jewellery lover’s collection. Gentlemen! If you are thinking of getting married, proposing with a Tanzanite engagement ring is definitely going to set you apart. Your fiancée is going to flaunt the ring to family and friends so why not get her a ring that is both unique and beautiful.

Olduvai Gorge Museum

Olduvai Gorge was made famous by paleoanthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey, who conducted numerous diggings here in the mid 20th century. This is one of the most famous archaeological locations in East Africa, where the remains of the earliest humans were found. The hundreds of fossils (bones) discovered here date back millions of years. A visit to the Olduvai Gorge focuses on the smart new museum, opened in October 2017 and overlooking the gorge. Whilst here you will also have a chance to listen to a short presentation by a resident guide. Set between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, the gorge makes a good stop if you’re travelling between the two, rewarding visitors with a presentation on its history, an excellent new museum, and beautiful views – as well as the possibility of visiting an active dig. Visits to Olduvai Gorge normally take place as you drive between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, or vice versa, so timings will depend on when you are passing by.
