Tanzania is one of the best safari destinations in the world. Unlike other safari destinations, Tanzania is accessible all year round.  We will advise you the best itinerary based on your safari dates.

The dry season (from late June to October) is the most popular time for a Tanzania safari. During this dry season, animals congregate near water sources putting predators and prey in close proximity and making for some exciting game viewing. One important thing to bear in mind, however, is the crowding that can occur in certain parks during these favorable periods.

Should you wish to avoid other tourists, consider visiting Tanzania during the green season, usually from March to June. It can get a little difficult if you want to travel to really remote areas during the rainy season, however the roads between Arusha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti are good and well maintained, and still very much passable even during the rains.

From the end of December to February is also a popular time to travel to Tanzania, and can be a spectacular time to visit, with the herds generally attracting a lot of predators and some real wildlife drama! It is the calving season. You are more likely to see the newborns in Southern Serengeti, Ndutu side. You may have the opportunity to see these newborns take their first few steps!

Tanzania’s tropical climate is relatively constant all year due to the country’s proximity to the equator. Daytime temperatures usually range from 23°C to 32°C with early mornings and evenings feeling noticeably cooler. It is important to note that regional variation and altitude will also come in to play. The mountainous and highland areas of the country are cooler(like Arusha and Ngorongoro), with temperatures sometimes dropping below 15°C at night during June and August. In this area, it can rain at any time of year (usually in the early mornings if at all).

If you have a particular preference of what wildlife you want to see, you may want to think carefully about which parks you visit and at what time of year you travel.

Tanzania remains one of the most beloved and enchanting safari destinations in the world. Wildlife, beaches, friendly people, fascinating cultures, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Mt Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar Archipelago – Tanzania has all these and more. Most people visit Tanzania to throw themselves into the abundance of wildlife for which the country is renowned. The northern safari circuit is the most travelled and offers some of the world’s most diverse safari experiences including the lush and abundant Ngorongoro Crater, the world famous Serengeti National Park, and the beautiful wilderness of Tarangire National Park. In addition, there are many activities you can include during your safari. Please see our excursions list and tell us your favorites.

When planning a private safari to Tanzania, it is important to understand the distances and travel time between destinations. Depending on your budget, number of days, and your must-see list, you can opt for fly-in package or driving-safaris.

Fly-in Safaris

Any fly-in package is commonly referred to as a Game Package – meaning that your game drives are included at the camp. Though Game package is more expensive, the main advantage this gives you over the driving safari option is that you really save time and you avoid the bumpy long transfer drives. Another advantage is the view from the air. Flying over the Great Rift Valley, alongside an extinct volcano, and on to the endless Serengeti plains in the distance is a flight you’ll never forget. To see such a diverse land with plains, rivers, lakes, and cliffs all passing by feels surreal.

Many national parks have airstrips. The aircrafts are normally small flights – Cessna Caravan, seating between 12 and 20 people.Your camp will arrange to send a guide to meet you. Normally, the guide that meets you will then be your guide during your stay at the camp – which has its advantages too. The guide is permanently based at one camp, so his actual knowledge of the area, the resident wildlife, even the weather patterns, will be amazing – and on game drive, you will get to share this all with him. The camps do have a limited number of vehicles (4×4) based at the camp, so on a fly-in safari, you will find yourself with other guests – the vehicles normally seat between 4 and 6 people only, so everyone has a ‘window-seat’. The windows will roll completely up giving you greater visibility and scope for that photo opportunity.

Driving Safari

Driving safaris are very popular for the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit. Here, safari goers may take in one, two, three or more of the National Parks – including the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. The differences between the parks makes a visit to Tanzania, one which will give you a broad experience of East African nature, culture and wildlife.

The driving distances between the Northern Circuit major destinations are a bit long. Get ready to sit in the vehicle for maybe up to 4 hours a day.  Arusha to Tarangire or Lake Manyara, for example, is about 2h30 on a relatively good tarred road; the main gate to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is an hour further from Lake Manyara. The road between Ngorongoro and the main Serengeti Gate is dusty, bumpy and takes about 3 hours and you really are bounced about – hence the amusing term ‘African Massage’.  When you enter the Serengeti, you then may have another 2-3 hours until you reach your camp. On the positive side, you definitely see a lot. From the breathtaking view of the landscape, people, villages and not to forget the wildlife.

Your vehicle will be a 4×4 closed land cruiser, with a pop up roof for easy game viewing, and sliding windows for that all important ‘low down’ photo angle. It will be just your group on the vehicle – so whether you are a couple or a family or a group of friends travelling together, the vehicle will be yours and yours alone – giving you all the flexibility in the world.  So if you want to sit for hours watching lions sleeping under a tree – you can! Nobody will be moaning in the seat behind you because they are bored!

When you arrive at each camp, your driver-guide will ensure you are check-in, and all the services are confirmed as per your booking. He will also discuss what time you want to head out on your next game drive so that you all know what time you are next meeting.

If big cats are on your safari must-see list, there is no better place to travel than to Tanzania. Here you will find more lions – over 15,000 – than in any other African country. Tanzania is home to several different species, including the lion, leopard, cheetah and serval. Experience the thrill of seeing a pride of lions, tracking down a leopard or watching a cheetah on the open savannah on this awesome big cats safari. Our safari guides will tell you that a safari is hardly complete without seeing at least one of these amazing predators in the wilderness.

The great Serengeti wildebeest migration is the movement of vast numbers of the Serengeti’s wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, eland and impala. The herds move through the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystems in search of green pasture in an annual pattern which is fairly predictable. The precise timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.

You can see the Great Migration in Tanzania all year round – they migrate in a circular motion around the Serengeti National Park as such it is an ongoing event. Although we do our best to be as informative as possible, it is best to give us a call and chat to an expert who can give you the low-down on where the wildebeest are right now.
